Located in the centre of Samaniego, Remírez de Ganuza makes contemporary Rioja wines and specialises in Reservas and Gran Reservas. The winery has 80 hectares of its own vineyards spread over 240 plots in different locations in the foothills of Sierra Cantabria.
Its wines are characterised by their exceptional and elegant structure and for maintaining fruit and acidity despite their long aging process. Everything at Remírez de Ganuza matters: from the harvest, which is carried out by hand in 12-kilo crates, the meticulous selection of grapes, the respect for the grapes in the production processes, hygiene measures that border on obsession, and long aging in new oak barrels, mostly French oak.
Since its beginnings, Remírez de Ganuza has been known for revolutionising some of the traditional methods in the area, introducing improvements both in the vineyard and in winemaking. One of its most notable systems is that of separating the Tempranillo bunches into two parts. The shoulders, with a perfect phenolic maturation, are used for long-aged wines and wines with aging potential, while the tips are used for carbonic maceration wine, its “erre punto”.
They also produce a popular white wine that is aged in barrels for two years, as well as a reserva wine from a single vineyard located in Samaniego, Viña Coqueta.
To visit Remírez de Ganuza is to understand La Rioja Alavesa in its current form, a look at the tradition and to the future of wine making in the area.
